A gastroenterologist has shared seven foods that support the liver by focusing on the “cardiometabolic connection.” These foods help blood vessels, blood sugar, and fat processing, all of which are linked to liver health.
A key recommendation for this is the combination of strawberries and dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more). This duo is “packed with flavanols and anthocyanins,” which are compounds “associated with improving blood vessel functioning and better cardiometabolic health.”
Other foods on the list also support this system. Watermelon with lime and beetroot (with its nitrates) support nitric oxide production, which is crucial for healthy blood flow and blood vessels.
The list also features powerful metabolic regulators. Raspberries (fiber and anthocyanins) and apples with cinnamon (pectin and other compounds) help regulate blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, and lipid levels. Beetroot’s betaine also helps the liver process fat.
Finally, the list includes cranberries, which support the foundational gut-liver axis, and pomegranates, which are rich in polyphenols that are suggested to calm inflammatory signals, further protecting the entire system.
