Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirmed Japan’s firm stance in ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, insisting that Japan should be treated differently from other nations due to its unique economic relationship with Washington. He ruled out any easy concessions, stating that Japan’s national interests are on the line.
Speaking during a televised debate on July 6, Ishiba emphasized that Japan is the largest investor in the U.S. and has created more American jobs than any other foreign partner. “We will engage in negotiations, fully aware that Japan is in a different position than other countries,” he said.
As the July 9 deadline for reciprocal tariffs approaches, opposition leaders pushed for urgent diplomatic action. Yoshihiko Noda, president of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, called on Ishiba to speak directly with former President Donald Trump, suggesting that a breakthrough could occur if the two leaders engaged in direct talks.
Meanwhile, Yuichiro Tamaki of the Democratic Party for the People urged the government to prepare measures to boost domestic demand in the event of failed negotiations and steep U.S. tariffs. Other party leaders called for the protection of sensitive sectors such as rice and the implementation of broader economic safety nets in case trade tensions escalate.
