Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated on Friday that ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States have no bearing on whether he intends to remain in office.
Speaking to reporters, Ishiba emphasized that the two matters are unrelated, despite earlier remarks suggesting he would decide on his political future after reviewing the outcome of trade discussions. His clarification came after Washington accepted Japan’s request for President Donald Trump to issue an executive order addressing tariff issues.
Some members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party expressed concern, noting that Ishiba had previously cited the talks as a key factor in staying on. One senior party member commented that while the agreement could have been an opportune moment to step down, the prime minister appears determined to continue.
Ishiba also revealed he had sent a personal letter to President Trump, delivered by Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa, inviting him to visit Japan. He stressed his commitment to strengthening ties, saying he aimed to build a “golden-age relationship” between the two nations.
