Việt Nam and Japan have committed to enhancing their defense cooperation across several key strategic domains, including military training, cybersecurity, and post-war recovery efforts. This commitment was reinforced during a recent meeting in Hà Nội between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral defense ties and implementing existing agreements more effectively.
General Giang underscored Việt Nam’s dedication to improving consultation and dialogue mechanisms, fostering collaboration among various military branches, and advancing cooperation in areas such as defense technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He pointed out that defense relations have become a critical component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership shared by the two nations. The General also highlighted Japan’s role in supporting Việt Nam through personnel training, defense industry development, technology transfer, and initiatives aimed at post-war recovery.
Japan’s significance as a key economic and strategic partner to Việt Nam is evident through their strong collaboration in trade, investment, development assistance, and labor exchanges. This partnership has extended significantly into defense cooperation, supported by consistent policy dialogues and military consultations. The Vietnamese minister emphasized the need for expanded scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defense personnel, particularly in science, engineering, and technology fields.
General Uchikura reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to enhancing defense relations with Việt Nam, expressing support for increased cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, and the provision of healthcare services within the armed forces. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in cybersecurity, a growing area of mutual interest.
Both parties have agreed to maintain close coordination to foster mutual trust and contribute to regional stability and long-term strategic cooperation. This ongoing commitment underscores the deepening ties between Việt Nam and Japan, reflecting their shared goals and interests in maintaining peace and security in the region.
